On July 3, Swiss leisure carrier Edelweiss will commence its first flight from Zurich to Halifax, marking the first time the Nova Scotia capital will have regular Airbus A340 service. Previously, Halifax had only seen Airbus A340 operations during diversions or irregular events.
The new Zurich to Halifax route is the sole transatlantic addition to Canada or the US in July and August, according to Cirium Diio data. The peak summer season typically sees fewer new routes compared to May and June when multiple airlines launched 27 and 15 routes respectively.
Edelweiss' new twice-weekly service to Halifax will run until October 5. The route covers 2,898 nautical miles (5,367 km), making it Halifax's longest route. The local market between Zurich and Halifax is relatively small, with around 8,000 round-trip passengers last year. However, nonstop flights are expected to boost this number through attractive fares and promotions. Passengers can also connect via codeshare on SWISS-operated flights from Zurich to various European destinations.
