On July 3, Swiss leisure carrier Edelweiss will commence its first flight from Zurich to Halifax, marking the first time the Nova Scotia capital will have regular Airbus A340 service. Previously, Halifax had only seen Airbus A340 operations during diversions or irregular events.

The new Zurich to Halifax route is the sole transatlantic addition to Canada or the US in July and August, according to Cirium Diio data. The peak summer season typically sees fewer new routes compared to May and June when multiple airlines launched 27 and 15 routes respectively.

Edelweiss' new twice-weekly service to Halifax will run until October 5. The route covers 2,898 nautical miles (5,367 km), making it Halifax's longest route. The local market between Zurich and Halifax is relatively small, with around 8,000 round-trip passengers last year. However, nonstop flights are expected to boost this number through attractive fares and promotions. Passengers can also connect via codeshare on SWISS-operated flights from Zurich to various European destinations.

Halifax currently has nonstop flights to Europe operated by Air Canada, Discover, Edelweiss, Icelandair, and WestJet. These carriers provide 42 weekly departures across the North Atlantic without any overnight departures. Despite losing Condor in October 2024, flight numbers have increased by 40% compared to last July and by 75% since before the pandemic in July 2019.

This year saw significant additions such as Amsterdam (with a high frequency due to WestJet's codeshare with KLM), Barcelona (Halifax's longest Canadian carrier-operated route), and Zurich. Paris CDG is also set for a return after its last service in 2022.

In July, daily operations include London Heathrow with Air Canada's Boeing 737 MAX 8. Other routes include six weekly services to Amsterdam with WestJet's Boeing 737 MAX 8 and Frankfurt with Discover's A330-200/A330-300 aircraft.

Three Canadian airports will host Airbus A340 flights in July/August. Edelweiss will use the quadjet for Calgary and Halifax services while Montreal hosts Tunisair’s leased A340-300 from Universal Sky Carrier for Tunis-Montreal flights due to Francophone connections.

Tunisair has flown approximately 105,000 passengers between Tunis and Montreal last year; New York JFK was the next largest market but significantly smaller at under 14,000 passengers annually.
