Glacier Park International Airport is set to limit its operations in July 2026 for necessary runway repairs. The airport will operate only from Fridays at noon through Mondays at 6 p.m., between July 6 and July 31, according to Airport Director Rob Ratkowski. Normal operations will continue this summer.

Ratkowski explained that the runway asphalt, last resurfaced in 2009, has started showing signs of wear. He noted that airfield pavement typically lasts between 15 to 20 years. During the previous resurfacing, the airport saw a reduction of passengers by 35% due to limited hours.

While it remains uncertain how airlines will adjust their schedules, Ratkowski mentioned that ticket prices might be affected. "We will talk to the carriers and see if they are willing to try and mitigate that," he said, adding that airlines ultimately make their own decisions.

The director plans to encourage increased weekend flights during discussions with airlines as they plan their summer schedules. "We're going to enter into discussions with the airlines...so we'll know more about what their response is going to be later this year," he stated.

Despite potential impacts on travelers, Ratkowski emphasized the necessity of these decisions for community benefit: "There will be some impact...but we're making decisions that are ultimately in the best interest of the community."

The Federal Aviation Administration's regulations require repaving during peak tourist season when temperatures are above 50 degrees and rain is minimal. Ratkowski indicated July as the optimal time based on weather data from past decades.

Repairs will occur over four phases within four weeks, keeping a runway open for private aircraft and other essential services during three phases. Various alternatives were considered but found unsuitable by Ratkowski.

In addition to runway repairs, Glacier Park International Airport is undergoing a terminal expansion project which includes new boarding gates and facilities. The airport celebrated its new central area opening recently.
