The 6th UNI Africa Regional Conference commenced in Maputo on Tuesday, coinciding with Mozambique's celebration of 50 years of national independence. The event, marked by music and dance, is themed "Consolidate Working Class Power" and spans two days focusing on strategy and solidarity.

Amos Matsinhe, President of UNI’s Mozambican Liaison Council and General Secretary of SINECOSSE, highlighted the significance of the day: “Today is a great day for us because our country is celebrating 50 years of national independence following a long conflict that was successful in part due to international solidarity.”

Ivete Ferrao Alane, Mozambique’s Minister of Labour, Gender and Social Welfare, delivered the keynote address. She expressed pride in hosting the conference: “It is with great pride I give you the warm welcome on behalf of Mozambique... Your presence shows us that collective bargaining is the basis of social justice.” She stressed expanding collective bargaining and involving more young people to strengthen unions while ensuring workers benefit from technological advancements.

Damiao Simango from OTM (Organização dos Trabalhadores de Moçambique) acknowledged workers' roles in Mozambique's liberation struggle. He emphasized defending social gains amid high unemployment and poverty, advocating for a minimum wage that meets basic living needs.

The conference runs until June 27th and marks the first gathering of UNI Africa affiliates in eight years due to the Covid pandemic. Oyinkan Olasanoye, Vice President of UNI Africa stated: “We come from various countries... but we share a common commitment to advancing the interests of working people.”

UNI Global Union General Secretary Christy Hoffman addressed global challenges such as inequality and climate change. She underscored collective action as essential for unions to overcome these issues: “We come together across this region to take action in solidarity with one another... progress can be achieved if people come together and act.”
