Earlier this year, Amsterdam Schiphol Airport experienced operational disruptions due to glare from solar panels at a nearby solar farm. This issue led to temporary runway closures at one of Europe's busiest airports. Although the airport has six runways, closing even one can significantly affect operations and impact local residents.

The Dutch hub, home to national flag carrier KLM, is addressing the issue by pursuing legal action against the solar farm. The airport aims to have the panels removed after unsuccessful negotiations with stakeholders.

In March, glare from the solar panels forced temporary closure of runway 18R/36L, known as the 'Polderbaan,' between 10:00 and 12:00 for several weeks. This disruption also increased noise pollution for local residents as aircraft used alternative runways. The airport stated: "The solar panels below the approach route to the Polderbaan Runway are outside the landing area but due to glare when the sun shines, they are hindering visibility for pilots."

Reports indicate that similar issues may arise again in August due to the sun's position. As a result, Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is seeking a court order for panel removal following failed negotiations with various parties. The lawsuit claims that the facility poses a safety risk to air traffic.

According to reports, removing the solar panels would be costly, amounting to millions of euros. Haarlemmermeer municipality was warned about potential risks posed by glare before granting permission for construction near the A9 motorway.

A key issue is reportedly related to the type of glass used on these solar panels, which differs from what was recommended. Some claim that recommended glass was unavailable or more expensive.
