The Brazilian aviation regulatory authority, ANAC, has ordered the permanent closure of Voepass Linhas Aéreas. This decision follows the airline's failure to comply with safety standards after a fatal crash last year. The Air Operator Certificate (AOC) of Voepass was revoked on June 24, 2025, due to repeated safety violations and systemic failures.

The incident that triggered this action was the crash of Flight 2283 on August 9, 2024. An ATR-72-500 aircraft entered an unrecoverable flat spin and crashed, resulting in the loss of all 62 people aboard. The exact cause of the crash remains unclear, but since then, Voepass failed to complete at least 20 mandatory safety inspections.

Statistical data supports that flying is one of the safest modes of travel. However, following such a tragic event as Flight 2283's crash, it is critical for airlines to adhere strictly to safety protocols. Failing to do so is considered unacceptable by industry standards.

Preliminary reports from Brazil’s aeronautical accident investigation division, CENIPA, noted: “According to the transcripts of the audio communications between the PS-VPB and the control bodies, it was found that there was no declaration of emergency."

A flat spin is described as an extremely dangerous aerodynamic condition where an aircraft falls in a stable but uncontrollable rotation with little forward airspeed. Recovery from such a situation can be challenging even for experienced pilots. Unfortunately for Flight 2283's crew, they could not recover from their spin.

Aircraft maintenance plays a vital role in preventing mechanical failures during flight. Routine inspections and timely repairs are essential procedures that must be adhered to prevent emergencies or worse situations from arising.

International aviation safety requirements set by organizations like the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) are designed to ensure passenger and crew safety through rigorous maintenance protocols.

Maintaining an aircraft properly helps mitigate mechanical failure risks during flights by proactively addressing potential issues through regular checks and adherence to established safety standards.
