The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has launched the SAF Matchmaker, a new platform designed to connect airlines with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) suppliers. This initiative aims to streamline the procurement process by offering a central hub where parties can connect without incurring additional fees.

SAF producers and suppliers will be able to list available or planned SAF volumes on the platform. Airlines can then register their interest in purchasing these volumes. However, actual transactions will occur outside of the platform.

The SAF Matchmaker provides detailed information about available SAF, including volumes, feedstock used, production location and technology, emissions reductions, and compliance with relevant standards such as the Carbon Offsetting Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) or the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive (EU RED).

Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s Senior Vice President Sustainability and Chief Economist, emphasized the importance of this development: “To reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050, we need an accessible, transparent, liquid, and efficient SAF market. The SAF Matchmaker is another example of the work that IATA is putting in place to create a fully functioning market for SAF. The SAF Matchmaker platform will accelerate the uptake of SAF by reducing the costs and complexity that airlines face when searching for SAF suppliers.”

Initially available only to airlines and SAF suppliers, the platform supports both spot purchases and offtake agreements. It is expected that other buyers outside aviation will eventually be able to participate.

The platform is hosted on a centralized digital space dedicated to providing practical tools for aviation energy management.
