Dallas Fort Worth International Airport has introduced its first hybrid Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicle, the Striker Volterra. This makes DFW one of the initial airports in the United States to implement this advanced technology.

The Striker Volterra is a specialized six-wheeled vehicle designed to improve aircraft firefighting response capabilities. It features hybrid drive technology that allows it to accelerate from 0 to 50 mph in under 21 seconds, a significant improvement over traditional diesel models. In electric mode, it reduces fuel consumption and noise while producing zero emissions during station entry and standby.

"Enhancing performance by reducing response times is the key driver of transitioning to these new vehicles," said Daniel White, Chief of DFW Fire-Rescue. "The Striker Volterra vehicles are faster and more agile than our current fleet. Because they are also safer for our firefighters and better for the environment, this investment represents a rare win-win-win, delivering operational benefits while ensuring the safety of our responders and the community we serve."

The introduction of these hybrid vehicles aligns with DFW's transition to fluorine-free firefighting foam as part of an industry-wide effort to eliminate foams containing PFAS chemicals. The move highlights DFW's commitment to modernizing its firefighting infrastructure for cleaner and safer operations.

DFW plans to expand its hybrid ARFF fleet with five additional vehicles by late summer, making it Volterra’s largest customer nationwide.

Additionally, DFW is upgrading its ARFF stations with 480-volt power service to support the new hybrid vehicles' charging needs.

DFW Fire-Rescue is responsible for ensuring the safety of nearly 90 million customers annually and is recognized globally for its advanced aircraft fire training and response processes.
