In a recent rally at Gwanghwamun Square, UNI Global Union affiliates, including the Korea Finance Industry Union (KFIU) and the Korean Health and Medical Workers’ Union (KHMU), joined forces with national labor federations to advocate for stronger labor representation in public governance. This demonstration took place on June 21, shortly after President Lee Jae-myung assumed office earlier this month.

The coalition's rally was organized under the slogan “Everyone’s Wish! The Public Opens a New World Together.” They called on the new administration to ensure meaningful worker participation, uphold international labor standards, and prioritize public interest over austerity measures.

KFIU President Kim Hyung-sun emphasized that the current administration has a "historic opportunity to restore democratic practices and social dialogue."

The coalition's recommendations included prohibiting privatization, expanding public sector employment, and addressing issues such as wage discrimination and precarious work. This includes eliminating irregular positions.

The involvement of UNI affiliates is part of ongoing efforts by the labor movement. Notably, the KFIU-IBK union previously held a 120-day protest at the Industrial Bank of Korea to challenge discriminatory wage practices and advocate for collective bargaining rights.

As South Korea enters a new phase under President Lee's leadership, the labor movement is advocating for a renewed commitment to decent work conditions, fairness, and inclusive governance. The rally is seen as an optimistic step towards rebuilding trust among government entities, labor groups, and citizens.
