Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) | Official Website

Severe weather conditions led to a temporary evacuation of the air traffic control tower at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) on June 28, 2025. The incident resulted in significant flight disruptions, including numerous delays and cancellations.

Data from FlightAware.com indicated that ATL experienced 558 flight delays and over 470 cancellations. Delta Air Lines faced the most significant impact with 391 flight cancellations. Endeavor Air, a subsidiary of Delta operating under the Delta Connection brand, was also heavily affected, followed by Frontier Airlines and American Airlines.

The evacuation occurred during a busy travel weekend leading up to the Fourth of July holiday. Fox Atlanta reported that only two air traffic controllers remained in the building to manage communications with incoming flights during the storm. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that "air traffic controllers have returned to the Atlanta control tower after the FAA evacuated most personnel due to strong winds."

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) anticipates screening approximately 18.5 million passengers across US airports during the upcoming holiday period from July 1 through July 7, with an expected peak on July 6 of about 2.9 million travelers.

Hartsfield-Jackson remains one of the busiest airports in the United States, handling around 108.1 million passengers in 2024 alone. It serves more than 150 domestic and over 70 international destinations across 43 countries. The airport is home to Delta Air Lines' hub and features North America's tallest air traffic control tower at 398 feet.
