Virgin Atlantic, established in 1984 by Randolph Fields and Alan Hellary as British Atlantic Airways, has grown into one of the UK's prominent airlines. Initially aimed at connecting London with the Falkland Islands, its first flight took off from Gatwick to Newark on June 22, 1984. Today, Virgin Atlantic is part-owned by the Virgin Group (51%) and Delta Air Lines (49%), a member of the SkyTeam Alliance since March 2023.

The airline operates a mixed fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft, focusing on destinations across the US, Canada, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. It once operated flights to Australia via Hong Kong but ceased these routes following changes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Virgin Atlantic offers three classes of service: Upper Class (Business), premium economy, and economy class across its fleet of 44 aircraft. The fleet includes eight Airbus A330-300s, seven Airbus A330-900s, twelve Airbus A350-1000s in two configurations, and seventeen Boeing 787-9s.

In response to varying customer needs and budgets within economy class travel options, Virgin Atlantic provides Economy Light, Economy Classic, and Economy Delight fares. All fare types include complimentary meals and entertainment but differ in baggage allowances and seat selection options.

Economy Light is the most basic offering with no checked baggage included but allows passengers to purchase additional luggage space. "One hand luggage (maximum weight 22 pounds / ten kilograms)" is permitted along with standard seat selection at check-in.

Economy Classic includes one free checked bag weighing up to 50 pounds/23 kilograms and eligibility for upgrades using Virgin Points. It offers similar amenities as Economy Light but adds more flexibility for travelers who need checked baggage.

Economy Delight provides extra legroom with a seat pitch of 34 inches along with premium check-in services and priority boarding. Passengers earn more Virgin Points compared to other economy fares.

Additional services such as WiFi are available on flights starting from GBP 2.99 ($3.83), although availability varies depending on aircraft type.

Virgin Atlantic's website also features codeshare services offered by Delta Air Lines between the United States and United Kingdom; however, onboard offerings may differ from those provided directly by Virgin Atlantic.
