The Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) has announced a significant transformation in its regional operations with a firm order for 45 Embraer E195-E2 twinjets. This announcement was made at an event held at the airline's hub in Copenhagen Kastrup Airport. The new aircraft are expected to enhance regional connectivity, aligning with SAS's broader mission to link Scandinavia with global destinations.

In addition to the firm order, SAS has secured options and purchase rights for additional aircraft, expanding on its current Embraer operations where SAS Link operates older E195 jets. Anko van der Werff, CEO of Scandinavian Airlines, confirmed that the 45 firm orders and options for another 10 are designated for SAS Link, the airline's regional subsidiary. Van der Werff emphasized the global connectivity these new jets will provide by linking smaller cities to intercontinental hubs in Scandinavian capitals. He described this move as "the strongest sign of our successful transformation."

While this marks SAS's first commitment to Embraer's next-generation E-Jet E2 family, the airline is already operating 13 older E195 jets through its regional subsidiary, SAS Link. These jets have Swedish registrations and vary in age from approximately 6.58 years to over 17 years old.

According to Cirium, an aviation analytics company, SAS has scheduled over 3,000 flights using its existing Embraer E195 jets this July. The introduction of the new E195-E2 aircraft is expected to optimize operations further on key routes such as Copenhagen to Bergen and Oslo to Bergen.

Embraer's Commercial President and CEO Arjan Meijer stated that "The E195-E2 is the most efficient aircraft," highlighting its cost-effectiveness and ability to enhance strategic fleet growth while delivering a premium travel experience.

SAS may also consider replacing other regional aircraft such as wet-leased ATR turboprops and Bombardier CRJ jets with the new E195-E2s if they are returned to their usual operators. Deliveries of the E2s are set to begin monthly from late 2027.

Van der Werff noted that while there is flexibility built into this deal regarding wet-lease partners, certain markets served by ATRs still have a purpose beyond Copenhagen, particularly small domestic markets in Stockholm.

SAS plans to equip its new Embraer jets with approximately 136 seats. This adjustment aims to address specific route needs within Northern Sweden and Northern Norway where existing aircraft sizes are either too large or too small.
