The Emirates Skywards frequent flyer program is facing changes as American Express Membership Rewards members have been informed of an adjustment in the transfer ratio to Emirates miles. Effective September 16, the transfer ratio will change from 1:1 to 5:4. This modification implies that for every five Amex points transferred, only four Emirates miles will be received, representing a 20% decrease in value.

Eric Rosen from The Points Guy noted that this news follows a similar devaluation by Citi ThankYou Rewards, which adjusted its Emirates transfers from 1:1 to 1,000:800. That change is set to take effect on July 27.

Members still have two and a half months to use the current 1:1 transfer ratio with Amex. It may be beneficial to consider booking any desired Emirates award flights before the new rate takes effect. For example, Emirates charges 87,000 miles each way for business class on routes like New York to Milan or Athens. With the current transfer ratio, these flights can be booked with an equivalent number of Amex points; however, post-September 16, it will require 109,000 Amex points.

Currently, Amex Membership Rewards has partnerships with 19 other transfer partners after ending its association with HawaiianMiles on June 30. Most partners maintain a 1:1 transfer ratio except for Aeromexico Rewards (1:1.6), JetBlue TrueBlue (250:200), and Hilton Honors (1:2).

Despite the devaluation, transferring Amex points to Emirates could still be worthwhile if there is a valuable redemption opportunity or if a transfer bonus is available. Additionally, Bilt Rewards, Capital One miles, and Chase Ultimate Rewards also partner with Emirates and offer more favorable transfer ratios at 1:1.

For instance, the Chase Sapphire Reserve currently offers a welcome bonus of 100,000 points plus a $500 Chase Travel promo credit after spending $5,000 within three months of account opening. This offer can cover an Emirates business-class ticket from New York to Milan or Athens.

Amex's decision follows recent suspensions by all of Emirates' credit card transfer partners regarding reward transfers to Skywards due to speculation about potential devaluations. Transfers resumed on June 20 before Amex announced its upcoming change quietly.

The future actions of other issuers remain uncertain; however, opportunities within the Skywards program are still available until September 16 when the new transfer ratio begins.
