Boeing Air 777X | Boeing

Negotiations are underway between the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM District 837) and Boeing Air Dominance leaders in St. Louis, Missouri. Talks began on June 20, with union members voting overwhelmingly in favor of a strike should negotiations fail to meet their demands for improved wages, benefits, and working conditions.

The potential strike comes at a challenging time for Boeing. The company is dealing with production issues affecting its commercial aircraft like the 737 MAX and financial difficulties related to defense projects such as the Next-Generation Air Force One program. A previous strike in September 2024 resulted in significant staff reductions and further delays to the 777X program.

Boeing's defense sector remains a critical revenue stream, highlighted by its recent win of the U.S. Air Force contract for the F-47 Next-Generation Air Dominance fighter. Tom Boelling, President and Directing Business Representative for IAM District 837, emphasized the importance of these negotiations: “We’re not just demanding a fair contract for ourselves; we’re standing up for the future of aerospace jobs in St. Louis."

Union solidarity extends beyond St. Louis, with workers gathering in Seattle and Portland to support their Midwest counterparts. Past strikes have affected Boeing’s production lines across various locations, including those producing military aircraft like the F-15 Eagle and C-17 Globemaster III.

Despite these challenges, some areas within Boeing remain strong. The South Carolina plant is set to double production of the successful 787 Dreamliner model. Additionally, international interest continues for other defense products such as the P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft and F-15EX fighters.

As negotiations continue, both parties hope to reach an agreement that satisfies all involved without resorting to industrial action.
