A cybercriminal group known as Scattered Spider has targeted the airline industry in North America. The group, recognized for hacking corporate IT systems and holding sensitive information for ransom, has breached two major airlines: Canada's WestJet and Hawaiian Airlines. Fortunately, neither airline reported any operational disruptions.

Cybersecurity professionals are on high alert to protect their organizations and the sensitive information they hold. Amid these concerns, American Airlines experienced an IT problem that delayed flights across its network. Although unrelated to Scattered Spider, it has heightened worries about airline IT system security.

Scattered Spider is a group of young adult and teen hackers focusing on North American carriers, according to CNN Business. Two major airlines confirmed breaches by the organization: WestJet and Hawaiian Airlines. As a result, airlines are on high alert to safeguard customer data.

The risk extends beyond airlines as hackers often threaten IT contractors of their targets, putting various companies with clients in the airline industry at risk of attack. No operational disruptions were reported by Hawaiian or WestJet. Hawaiian is currently integrating operations with Alaska Airlines, marking a significant period for the company.

Aakin Patel, former chief information security officer for Harry Reid International Airport, noted that the lack of disruptions likely reflects good practices within the companies. He told CNN Business: “[the lack of disruptions are] likely a sign of good internal network separations or good business continuity and resiliency planning.”

Scattered Spider's history includes hacking into major corporations' IT systems and demanding ransoms for sensitive information. Previous victims include entities in entertainment and hospitality industries. In September 2023, Scattered Spider was linked to a massive cyberattack on MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment in Las Vegas involving millions of dollars.

American Airlines also faced technological issues unrelated to Scattered Spider's attacks but impacted operations significantly with long delays reported last Friday due to connectivity problems in some systems.

Airlines must invest in robust technological infrastructure and protection measures to ensure safe operations amid potential threats from groups like Scattered Spider.
