Canada's aviation industry is facing a potential workforce shortage, with up to 55,000 positions possibly unfilled by 2035. This shortfall is driven by an aging workforce and the sector's growth. The Alberta Aviation & Aerospace Council (Alberta AAC) has initiated a major workforce program to tackle this issue, backed by CAD$1.5 million in funding.
The initiative involves collaboration with Elevate Aviation, Careers, and the Canadian Council for Aviation and Aerospace. It targets youth aged 16 to 21, offering educational opportunities and internships to prepare them for careers in aviation. Nicole Holinaty of Alberta AAC stated: “By uniting key players in education, training, and industry, we’re creating tangible pathways to employment and shaping the future of aviation in Alberta.”
Globally, the aviation industry faces similar challenges. Boeing predicts a demand for 716,000 new aviation maintenance technicians over the next two decades worldwide. In North America alone, there will be a need for around 130,000 new pilots.
