Porter Airlines, Canada's largest airline without unionized pilots, is facing a potential shift as its pilots are considering joining the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA). This move comes amid a growing push for unionization within the carrier. If enough pilots support the initiative by submitting their cards and fees, they could soon be represented by ALPA, which is currently Canada's largest pilot union.

The decision to unionize may impact Porter's competitive stance against larger Canadian airlines like Air Canada and WestJet. The airline has experienced rapid growth post-COVID-19, expanding into new markets with modern aircraft. While unions advocate for improved employee conditions, they can also lead to tensions between management and union members.

Porter pilots are actively participating in this process by signing cards from the ALPA website and sending them to Ottawa, Ontario. ALPA reports significant support among Porter pilots but notes that no official resolution has been reached yet. The association warns pilots of potential negative responses from management regarding unionization efforts.

Porter Airlines was previously known for operating turboprop aircraft on short flights from Billy Bishop Toronto City Centre Airport. However, it has since expanded its operations to include major hubs such as Toronto Pearson International Airport and routes to the United States using Embraer jets. These changes have aligned Porter more closely with its larger competitors.

As Porter expands across North America with an "elevated" economy experience, its pilots might see this as an opportune time for union representation. Similar situations at other carriers highlight both the benefits and risks of unionization in the airline industry.

Unions have historically caused tension between company management and employees in aviation. For instance, United Airlines' flight attendant union spent over four years negotiating a new contract without success, resulting in stagnant wages for cabin crew. Porter's potential move towards pilot representation carries similar possibilities seen elsewhere in the industry.
