The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has strict guidelines regarding items that are prohibited on flights. These rules are in place to ensure the safety of passengers and crew by preventing potential hazards in both carry-on and checked luggage.

Flammable substances, whether gases, liquids, gels, or solids, are banned due to the risk of fire. The danger they pose is significant as a fire onboard can quickly become uncontrollable. Pressurized containers and explosive materials like medical oxygen canisters also require inspection because they could compromise an aircraft's integrity if there is a sudden release of pressure.

Firearms and ammunition are only allowed as checked baggage after inspection. This measure is taken to prevent any threats from firearms during a flight. Poisonous or reactive substances, such as strong chemicals like bear spray, are generally not permitted even if sealed. The safety of the flight depends heavily on maintaining clean cabin air.

Sharp objects and weapons, including everyday items like pen-knives or sports equipment that can be used as bludgeons, are restricted in hand luggage. Even imitation weapons face bans regardless of their potential effectiveness.

Among the most dangerous items identified by the TSA are those that could cause immediate harm to the plane’s operation. Items with flammable or explosive properties fall into this category. Portable power banks containing lithium-ion batteries represent a notable risk due to their potential for causing chemical fires when damaged or overheated.

Airlines have implemented various strategies to mitigate these risks. Some airlines have banned power banks entirely due to incidents where battery-related fires have increased significantly since 2015. In March, Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines prohibited their use onboard following similar actions by other Asian carriers.

Other commonly restricted items include high-proof alcohols, propane-containing devices like cordless curling irons, and aerosols such as spray paint and bug spray due to their flammability or chemical properties.

Despite these restrictions, some surprising allowances exist: live fish in clear containers can be carried on board while magic 8 balls cannot be included in carry-on luggage but may be packed in checked bags. Toy lightsabers are allowed anywhere on a plane; however, toy guns resembling real firearms remain prohibited.

Overall, TSA regulations aim at ensuring passenger safety by controlling potentially hazardous materials onboard aircraft while providing detailed guidance for travelers about what is permissible in their luggage.
