Onboard Wi-Fi has been a challenging aspect of air travel, often plagued by slow speeds and frequent disconnections. However, advancements in satellite internet systems are changing this landscape. A significant development is the use of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites.

Starlink, developed by Elon Musk's SpaceX, is at the forefront of this change. Initially met with hesitation, Starlink's high-bandwidth LEO satellite system has gained acceptance among major airlines such as Qatar Airways, United Airlines, Air France, and WestJet. Virgin Atlantic has also announced plans to implement the service.

Starlink offers significantly higher internet speeds than traditional in-flight connectivity options. The system uses thousands of LEO satellites to provide global coverage, including remote areas and oceans. It supports commercial airlines, private jets, helicopters, and supersonic aircraft.

According to Starlink, download speeds range from 40 to 220 Mbps and upload speeds from 8 to 25 Mbps with latency below 99 milliseconds. This allows passengers to stream content or take video calls without disruptions.

Traditional in-flight internet typically offers only 10–100 Mbps for an entire aircraft and struggles with multiple users. In contrast, Starlink could lead passengers to use their devices for streaming instead of relying on seatback screens for entertainment.

As Starlink continues its rollout, removing fixed IFE hardware becomes more feasible due to reduced weight and costs. Hawaiian Airlines was one of the first adopters and now provides free Wi-Fi on its Airbus A330s and A321neos.

Qatar Airways began offering Starlink on select Boeing 777s last October and plans further expansion by the end of 2025. United Airlines aims for full coverage across regional jets this year and is installing it on its mainline fleet.

European carriers are also adopting Starlink technology. Latvian carrier airBaltic offers free Wi-Fi on its A220-300s since early 2025. Air France plans to equip around 200 aircraft starting this summer, while SAS will introduce it by year's end.

Virgin Atlantic confirmed it would offer free Wi-Fi on its Airbus A330neos, A350s, and Boeing 787s starting in late 2026 through 2027. Air New Zealand is testing the system before deciding on a full rollout.

The ease of installation contributes to Starlink's growing adoption; antennas can be fitted within eight to ten hours. Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs) have been received for various aircraft models like Airbus A220 and Boeing 737 MAX.

Looking forward, additional certifications are expected for other aircraft types later this year.
