Initially announced as a narrowbody service using an “86-seat Boeing 737-700 BBJ,” this experiment ended by August 2017 when PrivatAir-operated flights ceased. However, SAS revisited narrowbody transatlantic flights with the delivery of Airbus A321LR aircraft in late 2020.
Since March 2022, SAS has operated several A321LR routes across the Atlantic. In July this year, its narrowbody network includes routes from Oslo to Newark and New York-JFK and from Copenhagen to Toronto-Pearson.
On June 12, SAS announced an interline agreement with WestJet allowing one-ticket travel within Canada: “as well as on SAS-operated flights connecting key European cities such as London, Paris, and Amsterdam with destinations across Scandinavia.”
With a limited fleet of A321LRs seating up to 157 passengers total across three classes—business, premium economy, and economy—SAS relies heavily on its widebody aircraft like the A330-300 and A350-900 for transatlantic operations.
In July alone there are 66 scheduled weekly departures using widebodies from Copenhagen and Stockholm-Arlanda to the US; including a new Seattle route launched May 21 celebrated by Ryan Calkins from Port of Seattle who noted it as “an exciting nonstop connection to Denmark’s beautiful capital city which shares so much in common with Greater Seattle region.”
