SAS, the Scandinavian airline representing Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, has undergone significant changes over the past year. The carrier has completed its restructuring process and shifted alliances from Star Alliance to SkyTeam on September 1, 2024. This move aligns SAS with potential majority shareholder Air France-KLM.

The airline has expanded its North American routes, adding new destinations like Seattle. In July, SAS operates 13 transatlantic routes, or 14 if flights to Nuuk Airport are included. Simple Flying delves into SAS' current and future North American connections.

Data from Cirium’s Diio Mi shows that in July 2019, SAS had nine transatlantic routes connecting Copenhagen, Oslo Gardermoen, and Stockholm Arlanda with six U.S. cities. Rickard Gustafson, former CEO of SAS at the time of announcing the Copenhagen-Boston route in 2016 said: “has long been high on our wish list of nonstop destinations and we are therefore delighted to start selling tickets for this direct daily service from Copenhagen.”

Initially announced as a narrowbody service using an “86-seat Boeing 737-700 BBJ,” this experiment ended by August 2017 when PrivatAir-operated flights ceased. However, SAS revisited narrowbody transatlantic flights with the delivery of Airbus A321LR aircraft in late 2020.

Since March 2022, SAS has operated several A321LR routes across the Atlantic. In July this year, its narrowbody network includes routes from Oslo to Newark and New York-JFK and from Copenhagen to Toronto-Pearson.

On June 12, SAS announced an interline agreement with WestJet allowing one-ticket travel within Canada: “as well as on SAS-operated flights connecting key European cities such as London, Paris, and Amsterdam with destinations across Scandinavia.”

With a limited fleet of A321LRs seating up to 157 passengers total across three classes—business, premium economy, and economy—SAS relies heavily on its widebody aircraft like the A330-300 and A350-900 for transatlantic operations.

In July alone there are 66 scheduled weekly departures using widebodies from Copenhagen and Stockholm-Arlanda to the US; including a new Seattle route launched May 21 celebrated by Ryan Calkins from Port of Seattle who noted it as “an exciting nonstop connection to Denmark’s beautiful capital city which shares so much in common with Greater Seattle region.”
