Delta Air Lines flight DL127, traveling from Madrid to New York-JFK, faced an unexpected diversion on July 6, 2025. The Airbus A330 encountered mechanical issues mid-flight and was rerouted to Terceira in the Azores. Passengers were delayed for 29 hours before resuming their journey to New York.
The incident occurred when the aircraft experienced engine trouble over the Atlantic Ocean. Reports indicate that the number one engine began shuddering, prompting pilots to shut it down and descend to a lower altitude. The plane safely landed at Lajes Airport around 16:00 local time.
Due to limited options at this remote location, Delta arranged meals and overnight accommodations for all passengers and crew. With few available flights from Terceira, Delta dispatched another A330-300 aircraft to retrieve the stranded travelers. This replacement plane arrived at Lajes Airport early on July 7 and departed later that evening.
