On July 10, Ethiopian Airlines commenced a new route from Addis Ababa to Hanoi, Vietnam. This route, previously unused for passenger flights, will operate four times weekly using the Boeing 787-8 aircraft with 270 seats. The flight will include a stop in Dhaka, Bangladesh, although fifth freedom traffic rights are not available.

This marks only the second time Africa has had passenger flights to Hanoi. Kenya Airways previously operated nonstop flights between Nairobi and Hanoi from 2015 to 2017 using the same type of aircraft.

Ethiopian Airlines frequently utilizes one-stop operations within its network as a member of Star Alliance. These operations allow more destinations to be served and often enable increased frequency compared to nonstop services. However, passengers connecting through Addis Ababa may find two stops less competitive than other options requiring lower fares.

The airline started flying to Dhaka in November 2024 with five weekly flights on the Boeing 737 MAX 8. The introduction of the larger Boeing 787-8 has reduced frequencies to four times weekly for Dhaka.

According to booking data up until May 2025, approximately 165 round-trip passengers traveled daily between Hanoi and sub-Saharan Africa. Most travelers connected through Doha or Dubai for quicker journeys compared to Ethiopian's two-stop service.

In addition to launching the Hanoi route, Ethiopian Airlines plans passenger flights to nearly 140 airports globally by year-end. Recent additions include Sharjah and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, Hyderabad in India, and Porto in Portugal.

Ethiopian Airlines was founded in 1945 and is headquartered at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. It is part of the Star Alliance network under CEO Mesfin Tasew Bekele.
