Last year, Spokane International Airport announced the completion of the Concourse C West Terminal Expansion project. This marked a significant milestone in the ongoing Terminal Renovation and Expansion (TREX) program, which aims to enhance and expand the airport's terminal facility to cope with rising passenger traffic.

The new expansion is set to accommodate operations for Alaska Airlines and American Airlines, featuring state-of-the-art technologies to improve efficiency. The airport terminal was outdated, lacking capacity for increased passenger numbers. Between 2017 and 2019, Spokane International set records for passenger traffic each year. By 2030, it anticipates serving 6.2 million passengers annually.

Ezra Eckhardt, Spokane Airport Board Chair, emphasized the economic opportunities this project brings: “We’re not just opening a new section of the terminal. We’re creating new economic opportunities for the Spokane community."

The renovation has expanded Concourse C by 144,000 square feet at a cost of $150 million so far. Three new gates have been added on the west side of the concourse, with upgrades planned for existing gates. The ticket counter area will also be extended with six additional counters.

Several features are included in this expansion: enhanced accessibility for passengers with disabilities; regionally sourced fixtures; a nursing mother's room; electrochromic smart windows; modern restrooms; and an open-air plaza.

Gate hold technology is among the innovations being implemented to manage plane traffic more efficiently. It helps match ground movement with destination traffic while considering weather data.

The expansion is expected to boost Spokane's local economy significantly by creating nearly 1,200 jobs and generating $87 million in household revenue across Washington State. The TREX project funding came from various sources including bonds and federal grants.

Construction involved local designers and firms such as Alliiance Co., Q&D Construction, and Garco Construction.

Completion of TREX is anticipated by late this year. According to Larry Krauter, airport CEO: "A decision was made not only to support regional businesses but help minimize shipping emissions."

Spokane International was one of America's fastest-recovering airports post-pandemic among small-to-midsize airports nationwide.
