Boeing 787 Dreamliner | Official Website

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, a modern commercial airliner, first took flight in December 2009 and entered service in October 2011. Over 1,100 units have been built, and the aircraft is known for its distinctive design features like a four-window cockpit and noise-reducing engine chevrons.

The Dreamliner comes in three variants: the 787-8, 787-9, and 787-10. These models can carry between 248 to 336 passengers and are suited for both regional and long-haul flights. According to Boeing's overview, it is the best-selling passenger widebody aircraft due to its efficiency and range capabilities.

All three variants of the Dreamliner can reach speeds up to Mach 0.90 or about 956 kilometers per hour as stated by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). However, their ranges differ significantly; the longest range belongs to the 787-9 at approximately 7,565 nautical miles.

Each variant has different specifications despite having similar engines and wing designs. The differences in range are attributed to structural adjustments made during development. The implementation of Hybrid Laminar Flow Control (HLFC) technology on later models like the 787-9 improved fuel efficiency by reducing drag.

Boeing initially launched the Dreamliner as part of its "7E7 project," focusing on fuel efficiency over speed following rising fuel costs post-9/11. This shift aligned with industry trends towards point-to-point travel rather than hub-and-spoke models.

The Dreamliner's performance benefits from composite materials that reduce weight and advanced engines like General Electric's GEnx-1B or Rolls-Royce's Trent 1000. Despite some technical challenges faced by these engines, such as cracking blades or icing issues addressed by directives from aviation authorities like the FAA, the fleet remains widely used today with over one billion passengers transported globally since launch.
