KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has initiated a new operational strategy by deploying Air France crew on its Boeing 777 aircraft for flights between Amsterdam Schiphol International Airport and New York John F. Kennedy International Airport. This collaboration marks the first time an Air France flight crew will operate a KLM Boeing 777-200ER on this route, with the arrangement set to last four months.

The cross-crew initiative aims to address KLM's pilot shortage during the busy summer season. The first mixed crew flight departed from Amsterdam on July 16, 2025, at 1:25 PM local time as flight KL641, featuring Air France pilots and KLM cabin crew aboard a Boeing 777-200ER registered as PH-BQG.

These flights are scheduled to operate daily until October 25, 2025. Significant efforts have been made by teams at both airlines to coordinate with stakeholders such as unions and aviation authorities. Maarten Stienen, Chief Operating Officer of KLM, commented: “This collaboration will help KLM to operate its scheduled flights this summer. It supplements our capacity this summer, which is good for KLM as a whole. I am proud that we have made this possible within the Air France-KLM Group. I wish all my colleagues on the route a safe flight and a pleasant collaboration.”

KLM maintains a strong presence on the transatlantic corridor between Amsterdam and New York JFK with 18 weekly flights during the summer season. Of these, 11 use Boeing 777-200ER aircraft while seven utilize Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners.

KLM currently operates a fleet of 15 Boeing 777-200ERs with an average age of over two decades and also uses its Boeing 787 Dreamliners on this route. Until June 2025, Airbus A330-200s were also part of their transatlantic service.

The airline faces competition from US carriers like Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways on this route. Delta operates 14 weekly flights using Airbus A330neos and A330-300s while JetBlue offers seven weekly flights with Airbus A321neo aircraft.

The pilot shortage at KLM results from increased air travel demand post-pandemic and challenges in replacing retiring or part-time pilots. In January 2025, it was reported that KLM lost about 50 full-time jobs annually due to part-time work becoming more common among pilots.

As a temporary solution to this shortage, cross-crew collaboration has been introduced while training continues for KLM pilots on Air France’s Airbus A350s in preparation for future integration into their fleet by 2026-2027.
