Marriott Bonvoy has introduced an automatic room upgrade system aimed at enhancing the check-in process for its elite members. This new technology is designed to streamline complimentary room upgrades by approving them before guests arrive at the property.

The upgrade system targets Marriott Gold Elite members and above, who are eligible for these complimentary enhancements. Previously, guests had to request or hope for upgrades upon arrival, often relying on their interaction with front desk staff. Now, the system aims to simplify this by automatically upgrading eligible guests prior to their arrival.

The process begins with Nightly Upgrade Awards being approved five days before check-in for most brands, and three days prior for Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, and Edition properties. Complimentary room upgrades are then assigned starting at 3 p.m. on the day before check-in.

Despite this automation, hotel staff still play a role in assigning and confirming available upgraded rooms. A spokesperson from Marriott stated that "During our initial pilot, both associates and members provided overwhelmingly positive feedback, and we're thrilled to roll out the technology globally."

However, securing an upgrade remains uncertain due to limited availability compared to the number of elite members. Redeeming a Nightly Upgrade Award could improve chances but does not guarantee approval as requests are considered close to check-in dates.

Ultimately, while Marriott's new system may facilitate a smoother upgrade process for Gold Elite members and above, those seeking guaranteed upgrades might consider using Bonvoy points or paying with a Marriott credit card for premium rooms.
