An IndiGo Airbus A320neo, operating flight 6E-6271 from Delhi to Goa, made an emergency landing in Mumbai on July 16 due to a reported engine issue. The aircraft landed safely at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport after a full emergency was declared.

The airline confirmed the detection of a technical snag during the flight but did not provide further details. All passengers were safely deboarded, and another aircraft was arranged to complete their journey. The affected plane will remain grounded for checks and maintenance.

The Airbus A320neo involved, registered VT-IZB, typically departs from Indira Gandhi International Airport around 19:30 and arrives at Manohar International Airport by 22:00 local time. On this occasion, it departed late at approximately 20:16 and reported an engine failure while cruising at 34,000 feet near Mumbai. The aircraft landed safely on runway 27 around 21:52 without disrupting broader airport operations.

IndiGo stated that the diversion followed standard procedures and confirmed all passengers had safely deboarded. An IndiGo spokesperson said, "A technical snag was detected on flight 6E 6271 while flying from Delhi to Manohar International Airport, Goa on July 16."

The jet is powered by Pratt & Whitney’s PW1127G-JM engines, which have faced reliability issues across multiple operators recently. Delivered to IndiGo in 2018, the aircraft has accumulated over 21,400 flight hours across more than 12,000 flights.

This incident is not isolated; similar issues have occurred with other IndiGo narrowbody aircraft involving Pratt & Whitney engines. In August 2023, two A321neo aircraft experienced mid-flight engine problems prompting emergency procedures.

India's aviation regulator investigated these incidents and found metallic chips on the engines’ oil chip detectors tied to ongoing technical issues with Pratt & Whitney’s GTF engines.
