The UK has revealed a new design for its supersonic fighter, the Tempest, which is part of the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP). The announcement includes that 60% of the components have entered initial manufacturing. This development marks the first supersonic air superiority fighter designed in the UK in four decades.

The GCAP involves collaboration between the UK, Italy, and Japan, with major industry partners like BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, and MBDA UK contributing to its development. The project utilizes advanced technologies such as digital manufacturing and stealth compatibility to enhance and de-risk this sixth-generation combat aircraft.

BAE Systems’ sites in Lancashire are leading the production using innovative robotic and digital methods to create key parts of the aircraft. Test pilots from organizations including the Royal Air Force have already logged over 300 hours of flight time in the Combat Air Flying Demonstrator to evaluate performance aspects.

Richard Berthon from the UK Ministry of Defence emphasized the significance of this project by stating: “For the first time, people can see how this cutting-edge demonstrator aircraft will look when it takes to the skies. Manufacturing of the aircraft continues at pace, which is testament to the ingenuity and collaboration of Government and industry teams.”

The Tempest aims to be among the most advanced fighter jets globally, with features such as interoperability, adaptability, and connectivity. The GCAP not only focuses on delivering a next-generation combat air capability but also on strengthening industrial bases and creating skilled jobs through partnerships with high-tech SMEs.

Investment in GCAP involves over 1,000 suppliers across participating nations. The program aims for significant technological advancements by employing artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and wearable technologies. It is expected that these efforts will contribute significantly to defeating future threats by 2040+.
