Spirit AeroSystems is undergoing a significant transition as it faces acquisition by major industry players Airbus and Boeing. This development follows 20 years after Boeing spun off its Wichita, Kansas facility to establish Spirit AeroSystems, which has since become a notable entity in aircraft manufacturing. However, the company has been dealing with substantial losses and quality control challenges.

The Belfast division of Spirit AeroSystems has reported increased financial losses, raising concerns about its sustainability. The company is currently selling assets and operations to other manufacturers. Boeing is acquiring parts related to its programs, while Airbus is purchasing sections associated with its initiatives. The remainder will be distributed between these two companies or sold to third parties.

By 2024, Spirit AeroSystems had accumulated billions in losses when Boeing agreed to acquire most of the company. Independent auditors have indicated that additional funding is necessary for the Belfast facility's survival, as current funds may only sustain operations until September next year. In 2024 alone, the Belfast plant recorded over $500 million in pre-tax losses.

Despite an increase in turnover from $723 million in 2023 to $804 million this year, two significant one-time charges totaling $403 million offset these figures. Additionally, the company's liabilities have nearly doubled compared to last year.

Spirit's Belfast plant operates with just $72 million cash on hand amid an ongoing UK investigation into Boeing's acquisition of Spirit AeroSystems. These factors cast doubt on whether the company can continue beyond September 2026.

In 2024, Boeing announced plans to purchase Spirit AeroSystems as part of efforts to reintegrate manufacturing processes internally. Originally focused on producing Boeing 737 fuselages at its Wichita facility, Spirit expanded its operations for other manufacturers over time.

Spirit’s facilities across various locations are set for acquisition by Airbus or Boeing:

- Belfast primarily manufactures wings for Airbus A220.

- Prestwick produces wings for A320 and A350 models.

- Facilities in Morocco and several US states also contribute work towards Airbus projects.
