Delta Air Lines is preparing to launch a new direct service from Los Angeles to Hong Kong, competing with Cathay Pacific and United Airlines. The daily service will use the Airbus A350-900. United Airlines' CEO has expressed skepticism about Delta's profitability on this route.

The new route, starting June 6, marks Delta's investment at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). It includes upcoming flights to Melbourne, Australia, and three daily services to Chicago O'Hare beginning June 7. Delta plans to cater to passenger demand and enhance its trans-Pacific cargo network with the A350 capable of carrying significant cargo per flight.

After an eight-year break from the Los Angeles-Hong Kong route, Delta aims to boost its presence in the market alongside its joint venture with Korean Air. Paul Baldoni, SVP of Network Planning at Delta, stated: “Launching service to Hong Kong and Chicago from LAX strengthens our presence in two of the world’s most dynamic markets."

United Airlines has a robust trans-Pacific operation and recently increased capacity on Asian routes by 6%, compared to Delta's 11% increase but with a slight decrease in unit revenue. United believes it holds a stronger position in the Hong Kong-California market.

Delta passengers on this new route can connect through more than 30 non-stop services from Los Angeles via partner airlines. Elite passengers at LAX can enjoy enhanced experiences at the Delta One lounge offering exclusive amenities.

Delta Air Lines was founded in 1929 and is part of the SkyTeam alliance. Its CEO is Ed Bastian.
