KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has decided to suspend its San Diego to Amsterdam service for the upcoming winter season. This decision, reported by aviation analytics company Cirium, will reduce San Diego's transatlantic connections to just two this winter.

The final flight on this route is scheduled for October 23, 2025, with services expected to resume on February 21, 2026. Simple Flying has contacted KLM for a statement.

This route was introduced in May 2025 and was previously unserved. The flights operate three times weekly using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners configured in four classes. However, due to low demand, KLM will not continue these operations through the winter.

With KLM's suspension, only British Airways and Lufthansa will connect Europe to San Diego. British Airways operates daily flights from London Heathrow using Boeing 777s, while Lufthansa flies five times a week from Munich with Airbus A350-900 aircraft.

KLM maintains a strong presence in the transatlantic market with flights to 15 US destinations during the summer season. Popular routes include Amsterdam to New York (JFK), San Francisco (SFO), and Washington Dulles (IAD).

In response to a pilot shortage, KLM has begun using Air France crews on its Boeing 777 aircraft between Amsterdam and JFK for four months.

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport serves as a major transit hub in Europe. In 2024, around 36,000 passengers traveled between Amsterdam and San Diego. KLM schedules its flights to align with Schiphol’s peak times for optimal connectivity.
