Boeing 777X | Official Website

Boeing's new 777X aircraft is drawing attention for its long wingspan, which surpasses even the Boeing 747 and Lockheed C-5 Galaxy by 10 feet. The aircraft features unique folding wingtips, enabled by Liebherr Aerospace mechanisms, allowing it to maintain a manageable footprint at airports globally. The 777-9 model will be the longest passenger jet once operational, measuring 251 feet in length.

The innovative design of the 777X aims to enhance fuel efficiency, with Boeing claiming a 10% improvement over the Airbus A350-1000. This is achieved through advanced aerodynamics and materials that reduce weight while increasing strength. The plane also boasts more spacious cabins with larger windows and increased cargo capacity.

Powered by General Electric GE9X engines, the largest ever fitted on a commercial plane, the 777X sets several records in aviation history. The series offers significant advancements compared to its predecessor, including longer overall length and wider wingspan when unfolded.

The era of large quadjets like the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747 is ending as production has ceased. Instead, future ultra-long-haul flights will rely on twinjets like the 777X and Airbus A350, which produce fewer emissions. Sustainable aviation fuel development is underway by both Airbus and Boeing.

The extended wingspan of the 777X improves aerodynamic efficiency and reduces fuel consumption due to a higher aspect ratio facilitated by folding wingtips. Scott Fancher from Boeing highlighted that the new aircraft builds on previous models' heritage while incorporating advanced technologies for better performance.

In comparison with other large aircraft such as the Antonov AN-225 'Mriya', destroyed in Ukraine, only the Airbus A380 and Stratolaunch Roc exceed it in size. However, these planes do not serve commercial passengers like the upcoming 777X.

Safety remains crucial with innovations like folding wingtips made by Liebherr Aerospace. These fold automatically during landing at speeds over 50 knots to facilitate ground operations smoothly across inspected airports worldwide.

Boeing plans for airlines operating this model to continue using existing airport infrastructure due to its compatibility with Category E airports—the most common type globally used by legacy carriers operating older models such as those within their own lineup (e.g., B747).
