United Airlines will not receive its first Airbus A321XLR until the summer of 2026. The airline had initially planned for deliveries to start in January 2026, but this timeline has been delayed by at least six months. United Airlines has ordered 50 A321XLR aircraft, aiming to modernize its fleet and expand transatlantic services from key US hubs.

During an earnings call on June 17, Executive Vice President and CFO Mike Leskinen confirmed that no A321XLR deliveries would occur this year. Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella stated that the aircraft are now expected in "the summer of 2026."

The delay comes as part of broader challenges faced by the A321XLR program, including regulatory concerns and design modifications required by aviation regulators. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) raised fire safety concerns about the rear center tank.

Other US carriers like American Airlines and JetBlue Airways have also ordered A321XLRs. American Airlines placed an order for 50 units in 2019, with plans to receive them in 2025. JetBlue converted 13 existing A321neo orders into A321XLRs and expects delivery in autumn 2025, although exact dates remain uncertain.

Frontier Airlines initially showed interest in the A321XLR but canceled its plans in 2024 due to cost-saving measures and unmet expectations from the aircraft. Frontier instead focused on ordering more Airbus A321neo narrowbodies.

The Airbus A321XLR is designed for long-range flights, with a range of approximately 4,693 nautical miles. Despite the delays, it remains a popular choice among airlines looking to replace older models like the Boeing 757-200.
