Scott Kirby CEO at United Airlines | Official Website

In a recent earnings call, United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby expressed his admiration for Ryanair, calling it "the only remaining successful LCC around the globe" due to its strategy of avoiding high-cost airports. This comment comes as low-cost carriers in the US adjust their operations and fare structures.

Ryanair reported a $1.87 billion profit after tax for FY2025, outperforming other low-cost carriers like easyJet. It also became the first European airline to carry over 200 million passengers in a year. Speaking on June 17 during United's second-quarter earnings call, Kirby highlighted the challenges low-cost carriers face at expensive airports and praised Ryanair's approach of serving secondary airports to maintain competitive fares.

Kirby stated, "For what it’s worth, the only remaining successful LCC around the globe in my view, is Ryanair. And guess what? That’s because they’re the only LCC that stayed true to their founding principles and don’t fly to high-cost airports like London Heathrow or Charles de Gaulle."

Despite not reaching its FY24 net income levels, Ryanair experienced a record year for passenger numbers with traffic increasing by 9% and profits remaining strong even with a 7% drop in average fare prices.

In comparison, Southwest Airlines achieved record revenues of $27.6 billion in 2024 but had a net income of $465 million—about one-fourth of Ryanair's earnings. Spirit Airlines was among the worst performers with losses exceeding $1.2 billion in 2024.

Kirby also noted that United and Delta Air Lines are leading competitors in the US due to their strong customer bases and route networks. He commented on their market share growth: "The advantages that we have are structural, permanent, irreversible and they’re growing and it’s simply not practical to copy them."

Delta has recorded $2.4 billion in profits for the first half of 2025 while United has achieved $1.4 billion so far this year.
