Alaska Airlines resumed operations after an IT systems failure forced a temporary halt to all flights on Sunday evening. The disruption affected both mainline Alaska and regional Horizon Air flights, leading to numerous cancellations and delays.

The outage began around 20:00 PST on July 20 due to a critical systems failure at the airline's data center. By 23:00, the ground stop was lifted, and services began resuming. Alaska Airlines confirmed that the issue was caused by a malfunction of hardware from a third-party vendor and not related to any external threat or cyberattack.

"When that happened, it impacted several of our key systems that enable us to run various operations, necessitating the implementation of a ground stop to keep aircraft in position. The safety of our flights was never compromised," stated the airline.

The carrier is working with the vendor to replace the failed equipment and stabilize system performance. Despite resuming flight operations shortly after the three-hour outage, residual disruptions continued into Monday. According to Flightaware data, about 83 Alaska Airlines flights were canceled, and more than 170 delayed at the time of reporting.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport recorded over 160 delayed flights by Sunday night. Other airports also experienced significant disruptions, including Anchorage International Airport with 34 delays and San Francisco with 28 delays.

While Alaska Airlines has ruled out a cyber-related cause for this outage, recent events have raised concerns about cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the aviation industry. Last month, Hawaiian Airlines reported an IT system breach linked to Scattered Spider, a hacking group targeting North American aviation companies.
