American Airlines has dropped its federal lawsuit against United Airlines but continues to pursue legal action in local court over gate allocations at Chicago O'Hare International Airport. The Fort Worth-based airline is contesting the City of Chicago's decision to allocate more gates to United, alleging it violates a 2018 agreement.
According to American, the city is prematurely assigning gates to United before the agreed deadline. "The Gate Redetermination would be based on airlines’ flight statistics from calendar year 2024, before all three new gates became available for American to use for additional flights, and would go into effect on October 1, 2025," states American's court filing. It claims this redetermination favors United by granting them approximately five more gates while reducing American's allocation by four.
Initially filed in federal court, American sought a temporary restraining order but did not succeed in obtaining it. The case has now been refiled with the Cook County Chancery Court.
