What are the world's most advanced fighter jets? The answer varies depending on the mission. The F-22 Raptor is excellent for air dominance, while the F-35 Lightning II can handle a broader range of missions. The F-35's advantage lies in its situational awareness and ability to communicate with fourth-generation fighters.

Sixth-generation fighter jets are under development but not yet in service. Fifth-generation fighters like the F-35, F-22, J-20, and Su-57 are currently active. Notable fourth-generation fighters include the F-15 family, F/A-18 Super Hornet, Dassault Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon, Chengdu J-10, and Su-34/30/35 family.

This list prioritizes situational awareness, range, and stealth over acrobatic performance and speed.

The Eurofighter Typhoon is among leading fourth-generation fighters. It has delivered 609 production units. Despite being a multirole aircraft designed for air superiority, it excels in carrying large ordinance amounts. Its operators include the United Kingdom, Italy, and Germany.

The F-15EX Eagle II is an advanced version of the original 1970s design. With a Raytheon AN/APG-82(V)1 AESA radar and other features, it remains relevant today. Boeing delivers around a dozen updated F-15s annually.

China's J-20 Mighty Dragon surpasses Russian technology as China's leading fighter jet. Though not as stealthy as the F-35 or F-22, it counters them effectively with its long-range design.

The Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor was the first operational fifth-generation fighter jet. Although initially planned for 750 units, only 187 were produced due to cost concerns post-USSR collapse. Upgrades are underway to maintain its air dominance role into the 2040s.

Finally, Lockheed Martin's F-35 Lightning II is considered today's most capable fighter jet with over 1,100 units delivered worldwide. It's constantly improved with updates like Technology Refresh 3. Its helmet display integrates various sensors to enhance situational awareness.
