The 5th UNI Apro Insurance Unions Network Meeting took place on July 8, 2025, in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The gathering included 46 participants from insurance unions across various Asian countries, along with officials from UNI Global Union and UNI Asia & Pacific. Sota Kitamura chaired the meeting as President of the UNI Apro Finance sector.

The meeting focused on the theme "Digital disruptions and climate change: Impact on the insurance industry in Asia and the Pacific." It aimed to revitalize regional coordination amid challenges affecting the industry.

Unions expressed concerns about job insecurity due to AI, unequal access to insurance in rural areas, unethical agent practices, and a lack of public understanding of risk and protection. Participants stressed the importance of enhancing union capacity for social dialogue on these issues. This includes greater union involvement in public education, improved agent accountability, and early consultation during technology transitions.

Diwakara Ethugala from the Insurance General Employees Union (Sri Lanka) stated, “Unions are not just here to protect jobs—we also want to shape a better industry.”

Interactive sessions at the meeting aimed to boost participants' confidence in advocating for fairer outcomes amidst rapid changes. Discussions on life insurance and union success stories generated ideas for organizing, collaboration, and inclusive outreach.

A significant outcome was forming the UNI Apro Insurance Network Working Group. Shyam Sundar Mohapatra (GIOAIA, India) and Karuna Thapa (FIEUN, Nepal) were elected as co-conveners. The group will collaborate with the SAFSUC Executive Committee to develop a work plan for presentation at the 7th UNI Apro Finance Sector Conference in Manila on October 15–16, 2025.

The event was organized by UNI Asia & Pacific Finance with support from the Ceylon Bank Employees’ Union (CBEU).
