United Airlines has announced plans to suspend its only service route between the United States and Cuba starting this September. The decision follows President Donald J. Trump's National Security Presidential Memorandum, signed on June 30, 2025, which aims to "restore and strengthen" the U.S. government's stance against Cuba by reversing previous policies that eased restrictions.

Flights between Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Havana's José Martí International Airport will officially cease on September 2, 2025. Currently, these flights are operated daily using Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

The White House statement emphasized holding the Cuban government accountable and demanding meaningful reform in exchange for reduced measures. However, United Airlines has indicated that it may resume the route next summer if conditions improve.

In 2016, following policy changes under the Obama administration, United proposed several routes to Cuba from various U.S. airports. Steve Morrissey, United's vice president of regulatory and policy affairs at the time, stated: "With people-to-people travel to Cuba now authorized, it's even more important to ensure individuals across the country – not only South Florida – have access to convenient air service to this beautiful and culturally rich country."

The resumption of air service in recent years was seen as a step towards normalizing relations between the U.S. and Cuba after decades of embargoes. United resumed commercial passenger flights to Cuba in November 2022 after a hiatus due to the pandemic.

Despite suspending its Havana route, United continues operating charter services from Jacksonville International Airport to Guantanamo Bay.

United Airlines is known for having one of the largest fleets globally with approximately 1,040 jets. This summer saw an expansion of both international and domestic routes.
