When Hawaiian Airlines merged with Alaska Airlines in 2024, concerns about layoffs emerged. Now, it has been confirmed that 252 employees from Hawaiian Airlines will be laid off as part of the reorganization process. Most of these non-union employees are based at the Honolulu headquarters.

Hawaiian Airlines had been struggling financially before the merger but continued to hire union members. The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded Alaska Air Group Hawaiian's valuable routes and international flying rights on July 14, 2025. This decision has led to speculation that long-haul aircraft might shift focus from international tourism to domestic traffic.

Alaska is transferring Dreamliners from Honolulu International Airport to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport for a route to Tokyo Narita Airport. Despite this, Hawaiian Airlines announced ongoing operations to Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, and Seattle.

Kirsten Amrine, vice president of revenue management and network planning at Alaska Airlines, stated: “We’re excited to offer our guests more options to connect with loved ones or enjoy a warm winter getaway. These schedule enhancements reflect our commitment to providing convenient, comfortable travel during the busiest travel period of the year."

The pandemic and operational challenges have impacted Hawaiian Airlines' financial stability. Issues like Pratt & Whitney engine problems and competition have increased costs and affected profitability. The airline faced net losses due to debt structure and fluctuating fuel prices but avoided bankruptcy through its merger with Alaska.

Alaska is expanding flights from San Francisco to Hawaii while integrating operations with Hawaiian Airlines at major hubs like New York JFK and Los Angeles International Airport. Loyalty programs are being combined, allowing members to transfer miles between HawaiianMiles and Mileage Plan.
