Swedish authorities arrested a Delta Air Lines pilot at Arlanda Airport near Stockholm after she failed a breathalyzer test. The incident led to the cancellation of Delta flight 205, which was scheduled to fly to New York's John F Kennedy Airport. The airline will compensate passengers with $705 each due to the disruption.

The arrest was conducted as part of routine procedures under EU Regulation 2018/1042, which mandates random alcohol testing for flight and cabin crew by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). According to View From The Wing, "A police operation took place at Arlanda Airport on Tuesday morning. At 09.15, a pilot was arrested by the police during a check on board an aircraft…According to the police, the plane was about to take off from Arlanda when the arrest took place."

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) enforces a maximum blood alcohol content of .04 BAC for commercial pilots in the United States. FAA guidelines recommend abstaining from alcohol for 12-24 hours before flying.

Consequences for intoxicated pilots often include loss of their license and potential legal action. Swedish authorities are handling this case, but U.S. involvement may occur depending on developments.

In 2024, another Delta pilot faced similar charges in Scotland after exceeding legal alcohol limits.

Delta Air Lines is a full-service carrier founded in 1929 and is part of the SkyTeam alliance. Its CEO is Ed Bastian.

Flying remains one of the safest transportation methods globally despite such incidents, thanks to stringent regulations and industry standards.
