Workers at TikTok's Berlin headquarters went on strike on March 7, 2025, protesting the company's decision to lay off 150 content moderators. The layoffs are part of TikTok's plan to close its Trust and Safety Department and move moderation work to AI and external providers.

The workers, who have been training the AI systems that will replace them, are demanding fair compensation under the slogan: “We trained your machines – pay us what we deserve!” The German union ver.di, affiliated with UNI Global Union, organized the strike with specific demands for support.

Employees argue that recognizing their skilled labor is essential for retraining and transitioning into new careers. This is particularly important for those whose residency in Germany depends on employment. They also highlight the stress and trauma associated with their job, noting TikTok's significant annual revenue partly generated by their work.

Lucas Krentel, Deputy Regional Head of the Media Division at ver.di Berlin-Brandenburg, stated: “It is disrespectful of TikTok to shirk all social responsibility and even refuse to negotiate with us. Today, the employees are sending a clear signal that they will not accept this."

ver.di cautions that outsourcing moderation allows TikTok to avoid responsibility for fair pay and working conditions. Moderators stress that AI cannot manage culturally sensitive decisions without human oversight.

Benjamin Parton, Head of UNI’s ICTS sector, commented: “Content moderators are essential to making the internet safe and usable... Today’s strike is an important moment where content moderators are demanding recognition for all they’ve done – and sacrificed – to protect TikTok users.”

UNI has backed a global trade union alliance of content moderators advocating for living wages and safe working conditions. Last month, this alliance introduced a health and safety protocol aimed at safer content moderation practices.

UNI supports ver.di and TikTok moderators in Berlin in their fight for dignity and fair compensation in the digital age.
