Christy Hoffman General Secretary | UNI Global Union

UNI Global Union affiliates from twelve countries are urging America Movil to sign a global agreement to ensure stable labor relations. Trade unions from Argentina to Austria have written to local management, advocating for a worldwide agreement with UNI Global Union.

America Movil, owned by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, operates in 22 countries across Latin America and Europe. The unions' request follows a meeting of America Movil unions in Colombia on July 8, where they set their goals for the agreement.

Marcio Monzane, Regional Secretary for UNI Americas, stated: “America Movil is growing and generating huge profits – but that growth must not come at the expense of workers’ rights. Unions across Latin America and Europe are united in calling for a global agreement that guarantees fair treatment, safe conditions and respect for the fundamental right to organize. A company of this size and reach has a responsibility to uphold the same standards for all its workers, no matter the country, and a global agreement with UNI can make it a reality.”

On July 22, UNI affiliates from various countries including Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Colombia, Croatia, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, North Macedonia, Peru and Slovenia submitted their demand.

Oliver Roethig of UNI Europa emphasized: “America Movil must uphold labour rights and standards regardless of whether it operates in Europe or Latin America. We demand a global agreement that guarantees the right to organize, collective bargaining, living wages and job stability.”

America Movil is recognized as the largest telecommunications company globally by mobile subscribers. UNI has previously negotiated over 50 global agreements with multinational companies to secure workers' rights internationally.
