Lufthansa and Fraport AG have entered into an agreement to enhance aircraft handling at Frankfurt Airport. Collaborating with Lufthansa's subsidiary zeroG, the partners are introducing "seer," an AI-based camera solution aimed at improving the efficiency of turnaround processes.

The initiative involves using real-time data to streamline various procedures involved in aircraft handling, such as docking passenger boarding bridges, loading baggage, and refueling. Cameras record each step, and the AI system timestamps these actions automatically. This information is then consolidated into a central database.

The project began its development phase in 2023, with testing conducted from February to May 2024 at selected parking positions. Currently operational at five positions, "seer" is expected to expand to 20 by the end of this year's third quarter before a full rollout across Frankfurt Airport.

Jens Ritter, CEO of Lufthansa Airlines, stated: “Transparent ground processes enable us to further improve our punctuality and service quality. This benefits our guests in particular.” He emphasized the importance of modernizing operational processes with technologies like "seer."

Fraport's CEO Stefan Schulte commented on the broader implications: “At Fraport, we are driving forward a wide range of AI solutions to optimize processes at our airports.” The enhanced transparency allows for better adaptation of subsequent work steps.

Manuel van Esch, Managing Director of zeroG, highlighted how their solution helps manage complex ground operations under time constraints: “With the support of camera-based AI models, we make processes visible, analyzable, and controllable – in real time.”

This collaboration between Lufthansa, zeroG, and Fraport exemplifies successful partnerships in aviation that not only bolster Frankfurt but also set international benchmarks.
