Southwest Airlines has announced a major overhaul of its credit card offerings, which includes the introduction of new perks and a significant increase in annual fees. The changes, effective immediately, are part of the airline's broader strategy to update its business model.

The Dallas-based carrier is enhancing benefits on its Chase cobranded cards by adding ways to earn bonus points on restaurant, grocery, and gas purchases. "We believe that our existing cardmembers as well as the new cardmembers will see the real and measurable value that the benefits convey," said Corbitt Burns, Southwest managing director of cobrand and payments.

Despite these enhancements, cardholders will face higher costs. Annual fees for each Southwest card will rise significantly, with average increases around 50%. Chris Cracchiolo, president of cobranded cards at JP Morgan Chase, explained that this is the first fee increase in some cases in a decade. "We believe strongly that we're pricing for value," he stated.

New applicants can earn 100,000 Rapid Rewards points after spending $4,000 within five months if they apply before September 17. Existing Southwest Rapid Rewards Cardmembers' annual fees will adjust on their 2026 anniversary date.

In addition to fee hikes, several new benefits are being introduced. These include free checked bags for primary cardholders and up to eight companions flying on the same reservation. Cardholders will also have seating benefits allowing them to select seats even when flying on basic fares.

Changes in bonus spend categories mean customers can now earn more points from dining, grocery shopping, and gas purchases. However, bonus points for local transportation and certain services will be phased out by 2026.

Southwest's revamped boarding procedures offer earlier boarding opportunities for Rapid Rewards members who hold one of its cards. Some cardholders may also find it easier to achieve A-List elite status due to an increase in Tier Qualifying Points earned through spending.

While some existing perks such as EarlyBird check-ins are being discontinued by year-end, Southwest remains optimistic about customer reception to these changes. "We believe a lot of these [rewards] are unmatched in the industry," Burns added.
