The Boeing 737-800, a popular aircraft variant with over 5,000 units delivered to airlines, is seeing a decline in usage. This change is due to the introduction of newer models like the 737 MAX and A320neo, as well as aging issues affecting the -800s. Many airlines are now shifting away from this model.
Southwest Airlines, which operates a large fleet of Boeing 737s, including 203 of the -800 variant, is transitioning towards the more efficient 737 MAX series. The airline aims to become an all-MAX operator within a decade. This shift helps Southwest manage operating costs and environmental responsibilities while addressing cash-flow challenges that arose during the pandemic.
Similarly, American Airlines has been reducing its reliance on the 737-800s over recent years. Although it still has a significant number in service (303), American is investing in new orders for the MAX series. Maintenance costs and efficiency improvements have influenced these decisions.
