American Airlines has taken delivery of its first Airbus A321XLR aircraft, though it will remain grounded in Europe due to a shortage of seats. The airline, which has ordered 50 of these long-range narrowbody planes, confirmed the delay but did not disclose the seat manufacturer responsible for the supply chain issue.

The new A321XLRs are configured to hold 155 passengers across three classes: business, premium economy, and economy. American Airlines aims to use these aircraft to enhance service on transcontinental routes and expand into European markets.

Other U.S. carriers like United Airlines and JetBlue Airways have also placed orders for the A321XLR. United plans to replace older Boeing 757-200s with its order of 50 aircraft but announced further delays in delivery until summer 2026. JetBlue converted existing orders to include 13 A321XLRs, expecting their first delivery by autumn 2025.

Frontier Airlines initially planned to acquire the A321XLR but canceled its order in favor of more cost-effective A321neo models.

Globally, only four operators have received the A321XLR so far: Iberia, Aer Lingus, Wizz Air, and Qantas.
