American Airlines and Porter Airlines are seeking to establish a codeshare partnership to enhance connectivity between Canada and the United States. The airlines applied to the US Department of Transportation on July 25, 2025, for approval to implement reciprocal blanket codeshare services.

The proposed agreement would provide American Airlines with a strong Canadian partner, allowing it to compete more effectively with other transborder alliances such as Air Canada with United Airlines and Delta Air Lines with WestJet.

Once approved, Porter Airlines would benefit by expanding its access to the US market. The application published on the DOT website outlines specific routes that may be included in the codeshare agreement. Porter would operate flights connecting Toronto Pearson (YYZ), Ottawa (YOW), Halifax (YHZ), and Montreal (YUL) to any Canadian airport served by Porter. Additionally, routes between these cities and any US airport served by Porter would be covered, excluding Boston (BOS), Newark (EWR), Washington Dulles (IAD), and Chicago Midway (MDW).

Porter currently serves 16 destinations across the United States. With four destinations excluded from the proposed agreement, 12 are expected to be included: Las Vegas (LAS), Orlando (MCO), San Francisco (SFO), Los Angeles (LAX), Palm Springs (PSP), Tampa (TPA), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Miami (MIA), Phoenix (PHX), Fort Myers (RSW), San Diego (SAN), and West Palm Beach (PBI).

For American Airlines, this partnership could strengthen its presence in Eastern Canada markets like Toronto, Ottawa, Halifax, and Montreal. At the same time, Porter passengers traveling to the US can connect through American’s major hubs such as Dallas/Fort Worth and Miami.

As part of the deal, American would operate codeshare flights between Toronto, Montreal, Halifax, Quebec City and any US airport it serves. Additional routes would connect Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Tampa, Fort Myers, West Palm Beach, New York LaGuardia Airport among others with airports in Central America, Latin America, the Caribbean and South America.

The announcement comes amid trends in transborder air travel showing a slight decline in cross-border air travel despite some airlines increasing their schedules. According to Cirium data analytics company figures show overall capacity is down just 1% compared last year.

While some airlines have reduced flights significantly including Sun Country Airlines Flair Airlines Air Transat others like United Alaska have increased their flight schedules by varying percentages over previous years
