Delta Air Lines, the world's largest airline by total passengers and number of departures, is set to replace its charter fleet of Boeing 757s. These aircraft are primarily used for transporting professional sports teams across North America, including the National Basketball Association (NBA), National Hockey League (NHL), and Major League Baseball (MLB). The NBA owns these planes, which Delta operates under a contract.
The current fleet consists of 11 Boeing 757s configured as VIP airliners with business and first-class seating for up to 72 passengers. However, these aircraft are aging, with some over 30 years old. "Overall, some of the well-known aircraft in the fleet have the following ages," lists several examples like N650DL at 36.21 years and N652DL at 36.06 years.
To modernize their operations, Delta Air Lines and the NBA received approval from the US Department of Transportation to upgrade their fleet to Airbus A321neos. This new agreement allows for leasing or purchasing up to 14 Airbus A321neo aircraft. The transition aims to provide more modern and comfortable transport options while maintaining similar passenger capacity.
